If you are a property or homeowner, you bear the responsibility of ensuring the risk of potential damage is avoided by all means. While regular maintenance of various systems in your home can help maintain an efficient and functional home, poor maintenance of your plumbing can lead to significant water damage. When this happens, it’s advisable to reach out to a water damage restoration company, to prevent further damage. Water damage is one of the most common reasons for homeowners’ insurance claims; that’s why The Remediation Team is dedicated to helping you prevent such issues from showing up.

It is essential to protect your home from water damage by having the necessary information about the different types of water damage so that you can approach water damage cleanup the right way. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certificate (IICRC) classified water damage into three categories. They are categorized according to the severity of contamination, water quality, and sources. As soon as you suspect you have water damage on your property, you should use onboard the services of a water damage restoration company for assessment and cleanup.

Category 1: Sanitary Clean water

This category involves damage by pure water, which has undergone distillation and has a PH level of 7 or below. If you incur water damage from sanitary clean water, damage to your property is not as severe, even if the water goes undetected for days. Since sanitary water is fit for human consumption, there is minimal or zero risk of contamination. Water damage from this type of water doesn’t pose a significant health and safety risk, and The Remediation Team can have your indoor space back to its conducive and comfortable ambiance.

Category 2: Significantly Contaminated Grey Water

This type of water damage falls in the middle of the IICRC standards of categorization since it requires a lot of treatment before it fits human consumption. Unlike sanitary clean water, this water category is commonly used for industrial purposes and includes diluted sewage and wastewater. The fact that it’s considered grey means it contains a lot of contaminants and has a PH level that ranges from 7.1 – 8.5. Before proceeding with any water damage cleanup, The Remediation Team recommends mixing it with a small vinegar to lower the PH.

Category 3: Grossly Contaminated Black Water

This is the most contaminated water of the three, and it contains non-volatile, persistent contaminants. Many factors can lead to water contamination of this magnitude, including bacteria, micro growth, fecal matter, insect lava, radioactive substances, and organic contaminants, among many more. The PH of this water is 8.6 or higher and maintains a steady temperature of between 60 – 68 degrees. When dealing with a category 3 level water damage, you need to contact a water damage restoration company before the damage becomes more severe.
