Once hailed the “miracle material” almost a century ago, asbestos was used as a flame retardant. It was also served as a good insulator. For years, builders used it not knowing that it had potential health risks. Even after it was found that the tiny microscopic fibers caused serious health problems and taken out of production, the back stock of asbestos-based products were still in use until as recently as 2003.

Asbestos: what is it?
Asbestos is a fibrous material once widely used in construction until the latter part of the 20th Century as insulation. It was also known to be used as an adhesive for floor and wall tile. In modern times however, it is no longer used; however, asbestos-based products are still found in many old structures constructed as late as 2003.
The health risk stems from the airborne fibers of asbestos, and not from the presence of the actual material. Over time, as asbestos deteriorates, the danger from its microscopic fibers increases. When the fibers are inhaled, conditions known as asbestos and mesothelioma can occur. Safely abating the presence of asbestos in your property is essential in order to avoid serious problems later.

The Asbestos Abatement Process
From start to finish, all our procedures will be documented, detailing the steps necessary to restore your property to its safest possible condition. Photographs will also show the extent of the infestation within the structure of your home or business.
Our team will inspect the materials and collect samples for testing to verify if any of your structural components contain asbestos. With this information, we can determine the level of risk to human occupants. Asbestos was used in a variety of construction components and so could be found anywhere building materials are present. If the asbestos-based components have not been damaged, there is no immediate concern because the toxic fibers are not airborne. But once they are found, it would advisable to rid your property of all such materials completely before it becomes a clear and present threat.
Next our project manager will draft a plan to abate the necessary areas, using a series of refined abatement procedures. Once the plan is approved, we will proceed in abating the required areas. While each asbestos abatement project is slightly different from another, our general set of asbestos abatement guidelines gives us a solid place to start. From there we will modify our abatement process based upon the needs of your specific property.
Before beginning the abatement process, we are required by law to take certain precautions to avert health risks to ourselves and the future occupants of the property. First, it is extremely important the affected area be COMPLETELY sealed off from the rest of the building. Every crack and gap through which any of the asbestos fibers may escape into the rest of the premises is covered with strips of plastic or tape. Entrances are kept locked and posted with warnings not to enter.
Though not required, one effective strategy to contain the asbestos fibers is wetting the floor of the area being abated if this is feasible. When the asbestos-based material is torn out, its microscopic fibers become airborne; but, ultimately, they settle down, and the water helps trap them on the floor and less likely to be stirred up again. This makes the final clean-up a little easier to manage.
Also, our abatement team will wear special gear to protect and to take care they do not carry any of the fibers outside the sealed area. Specially made filters and masks are worn so the team members don’t breathe in the fibers, thus avoiding health issues like asbestosis and mesothelioma.
When the abatement process is complete, our team will dispose of their protective suits and filters. Then, the members of our team will shower thoroughly to ensure they are free of any lingering fibers that could have ill-effects upon themselves or anyone they live with or work around.
Once the material is cleared of the asbestos product, the team must proceed with the clean-up. Floors and walls are thoroughly cleaned and the fibers cleaned out with HEPA vacuums. If the floor is made of wood, our technicians will ensure it is scrubbed with special detergents in order to capture fibers that will be captured from the vacuum.
Any carpeting, poly used to seal the area, and other material present within the affected area, will be wrapped up, sealed, and transported off the property.
Finally, an air test must be conducted by the team or third-party to determine the fiber count does not exceed unhealthful limits. An air current is blown across the floor and adjacent walls as a sample of the air is taken via a vacuum device.
The air sample is tested for asbestos content in one of two ways: transmission electron microscopy (TEM) or phase contrast microscopy (PCM). Legally, a reading cannot exceed .01 fibers per cc to allow safe human habitation. When the tests show a safe level, the area is unsealed. Our team will assist in moving all your furnishings and other content back into place.
The Remediation Team will conduct one final inspection before leaving your property to ensure all problem areas have been addressed.
